To join the Michigan Defense Force, you must meet the following criteria:

* Proficient in English

* High school diploma or GED equivalent

* No felony convictions (background check required)

* Medical exam

* Pass a physical fitness test

* Meet height and weight standards

* Between 18 and 55 years of age (may be adjusted based upon prior service or needs of the force)

* Commit to an initial three-year enlistment (six years for officers)

* No medical conditions that would prevent job performance or passing the fitness test

Expectations of Service

* Attend monthly drills (typically one weekend per month)

* Participate in annual training (up to two weeks per year, usually non-consecutive)

* Be available for in-state deployment in the event of emergencies.

As a Title 32 force, the Michigan Defense Force serves only within the state – unless ordered by the governor – and cannot be

federalized. While enlisted, you are subject to the Michigan Code of Military Justice (MCMJ). Training locations vary depending on

your location.

In order to proceed with your enlistment or appointment, you will need the following information and documentation with

this worksheet.

Your recruiter will request other information when meeting with you (either in person, by phone, or virtually).

* Birth certificate

* Social security card

* Driver’s License / State ID

* Passport (if applicable)

* Civilian education documents (HS diploma and all post-secondary education)

* Military education / training documents

* Marriage certificates / divorce decrees / child support / alimony orders

* Spouse (and children) birth certificate and social security card

* For prior federal service prospects: all DD Form 214s, DD Forms 22-1, DD Form 215s, NGB Form 22s, retirement points statements,

and other selected documents (such as promotions, evaluations, and education).

* For prior SDF prospects (Michigan and other states): copies of enlistment, promotion, and separation orders.

The Michigan Defense Force is authorized and governed by the following statutes. The MIDF is further governed by internal

regulations and policies.

* 32 U.S. Code § 109 – Maintenance of other troops

* Public Act 150 of 1967 – Michigan Military Act

* Public Act 523 of 1980 – Michigan Code of Military Justice

* Public Act 133 of 1955 – Military Leaves; Reemployment Protection
